5 Things Photography Has Taught Me | Celebrating 5 years of Leilani Romero Photography

November 16, 2017

November is the month of all things good. Delicious Pumpkin Spice Lattes, gorgeous fall leaves everywhere, my parent's marriage anniversary, and a day of grace + thanks filled with family and turkey dinner...But this special month is also LRP's 5 year anniversary. Wow, five. I can't believe it.

Five years ago I decided to turn my favorite hobby into so much more. I have always been an artist with a love for cameras, but it wasn't until 2013 when friends and family pushed me to start a photography page that lead to a small business. Little did I know it would change my life so much.

Throughout these 5 years, I have learned a few lessons, and to celebrate this big milestone, I have decided to share my top 5 with you!

#1 Patience

Love is patient, love is kind. Always be patient when doing work, and do everything in love. If you ever find yourself in a place where you have been working on a project for long periods of time and things just aren't going the way you had planned...take a break. Frustrated? Be patient, and take a step back. When you come around a second time, I promise, you will see everything in a new light. Rome wasn't built in a day. Be patient with others, and give them time to understand. Believe in yourself, and always be patient with yourself. Be patient with your goals and your ambitions. Never give up on what you love, good things come to those who wait.

#2 Personality

No matter what, be yourself. There's no use in competing and comparing yourself to others. We've all been there. Truth of the matter is, no one else can do what you do. You are unique, and in this creative world over the years I have learned there is nothing better than being your genuine self. We all see the world differently.  Having a personality, and showing clients who you are, and what your business believes in will not only strengthen the integrity of your business, but give it a heart. Have an honest branding. Showing your true self through your branding will attract your ideal clients, and will separate you from the rest.

#3 Persistence

Anything is Possible...as long as you work for it. In business, you need to have faith. Many times you have an idea in your head and you don't quite know how it will work, or if it is even possible. This problem solving process is one thing that makes being a creative amazing. Be persistent with your ideas, and your goals. Never settle, and keep on pushing until you get the results you want and more. Have a great idea for a project, but not sure how to make it happen? Learn, research, and teach yourself. It might take a little longer then you expect, but nothing is impossible.

#4 Planning

I cannot stress this enough. Always plan ahead and be organized. Organization is key to maintaining a strong and well thought out work process. Take yourself seriously, so others will too. Being organized will not only take off the load of stress and worry, but it will make you feel more confident than ever before, because you know exactly what you are doing, and what you need to do to get there. Having solid plans lead to solid results. Additionally, always be clear with others. Being on the same page will ensure you both have the same expectations. Make it your priority to always have good communication when working with others. You may not always imagine the same results. I also highly recommend both a brainstorming journal and a calendar planner, to keep your boss-self in tip top shape. Keep those creative juices flowing!

#5 Passion

If you don't love what you do, what is the point? Always be passionate about what you are working on and do what you love. Life is too short to not be spending it on the things you care about most. Find what sets your heart on fire and never let it go. I promise you, if it's something you are that good at doing, you will be successful doing just that. Believe in yourself, love what you are doing, and others will believe and support you.

I'll leave you with these 5 P's, and I hope they inspire you...It's time to party.
